ABOUT ME

I’m an oil industry safety professional, and my work is shaped not just by my experience in the field, but by something far more personal.

In 1988, my father was one of the 167 men who lost their lives in the Piper Alpha disaster. That loss has stayed with me all my life and continues to influence how I see the industry, the decisions that are made within it, and the real human cost when things go wrong.

Working in oil and gas, I’ve seen first-hand how critical safety culture is in high-risk environments. Procedures, systems, and compliance all matter, but they only work when there is genuine accountability behind them. For me, safety is never just a checklist. It’s about people, families, and the consequences that extend far beyond the workplace.

I’ve also contributed to raising awareness of Piper Alpha and its legacy, including appearing in the BBC documentary Disaster at Sea: The Piper Alpha Story. It’s important to me that what happened is not reduced to a historical event, but understood as a continuing lesson for the industry.

Today, I use both my professional experience and my personal story in my writing and speaking. My aim is simple: to make sure the lessons from the past are not forgotten, and to play a small part in pushing for safer, more accountable practices in the future.
